Gear Music Player App Reviews

Really good app

This app is really good at what it says it will do. The functionality is there, it’s decently pretty, and it works. However, there are a few things that are missing form this app that make it a little half baked. There isn’t an option to just view an album. You have to search the album to find it and then you can’t filter it or go to just that album. Chromecast support would be nice. Overall, it’s a pretty decent app and I will continue to use it.

Slower than the site

It really isn’t bad, it feels a little old school iTunes but I’d still use it if weren’t for Play Music bein so darn snappy.

Amazing Application With Amazing Developer

So I got this app and immediately it was of great use as a way to get my google music without opening up chrome or safari. However, I had a small problem with a particular soundtrack. Needless to say, a few hours after emailing the developer, he got me a beta build with a fix for the specific problem that I had. I’ve never had such amazing customer support and such a dedicated developer. I’d buy again from this guy in a heartbeat!

Good Small update

While Im glad theyve updated this to increase stability there is still one feature Im missing: the ability to add songs to the radio playlist, and re-organize them within the radio playlist. However, it works perfectly otherwise.

The best standalone Google Music app!

Gear for Google Play has made Google Music so much more useful! Instead of being a simple skin with a web view, Gear is a full-featured, lightweight native app that lets you do everything Google Music does and more - the app brings tons of features including support for keyboard media keys, Last.fm scrobbling, gapless playback (awesome), an equalizer, system bar shortcuts and Notification Center support. Everything is presented in a familiar iTunes-like interface thats a pleasure to use. The developer also deserves a ton of credit for having instant turnaround on support emails. When I emailed him about a bug in a previous version that affected the sort order of multi-disc albums, he responded within minutes with a fixed version of the app that I could use right away while the App Store was still approving the update. Needless to say, Im a very satisfied customer!

Simply an awesome app

Uses less battery life than Chrome, and keeps nearly every feature from the web client. Probably one of the best purchases I’ve made on the App Store

Good, but..

It works as intended. However, it would be nice when sorting your music by artist to have the music organized better. When clicking on an artist it shows all of the songs in a list view. It would be nicer to have it go something like artist -> alums -> then songs on that album. It seems kind of chaotic the way it’s organized now.

It’s simple, if you use Google Play, get this app.

The ability to pause playback at the press of a button (with MagicKeys) as well as skip tracks is a godsend, especially if you’ve got a lot of things open, hunting for that one tab can be a real pain. Such a simple little program that does everything one would want for it to do. If I’m going to nitpick though, I wish there was an option to open in full screen mode by default as opposed to covering up whatever I’m doing. Still It’s a very nice app and even allows to stream audio to speakers if you have the Apple AirPort router for instance (maybe there are other ways of doing this as well. Really the features speak for themselves I think.

I want refunds.

Although it’s great app, I don’t want to use it. How can I refund?

Too much to correct...

This app still cant fully replace web version of Play Music. I cant browse artists and their albums, which i dont actually have in my library. I can only search for songs and play music from my library and sort music from library. Nothing else. Poor. I wouldnt buy it again if I could. 6$ is too much for app like that.

Fantastic App

I’ve used this app for a few years and it is vital for me when I want to listen to my collection of music in the Google cloud. Always works, and the dev keeps making it better. Excellent

Great but...

Fantastic app. Works great. However there is something that bothers me. The app downloads artist art on its own ignoring the embeded album art in the music files. So because I listen to a lot of foreign artists most of the times it matches the wrong album art to the song that’s playing!!! Please fix this. Either use the embeded art or at least give us the option to manually change the album art in the lower left corner.

Google Music without the Flash!

I was using Radiant Player before, but it was the only reason I had Flash installed. By installing Gear and the Magic Keys preference panel (separate free download), you can listen to your Google Music account just like iTunes - use your media keys to pause and navigate and dont worry about the impact to your battery life since you will be Flash-free! I talked with the developer about some issues I ran into and it turns out that it was my fault. This developer is great - super responsive! - and the app is basically perfect and really worth the six bucks! I wish I could give this more stars.

Needs a Notification Center Widget

Another music app without a notification center / Today View widget for controls and album artwork. Would be much appreciated.

Will not work on my new Mac Mini, Apple won’t refund?

I had big hopes for this app, but it simply will not work on my Mac Mini 8GB… All my Google accounts (including Google Play Music, Movies, Books) work fine with the Google-developed apps on this device, but not this app. I just want a refund. Why does Apple do UX so well in everything but refunding our money?

creme de la creme

The best google music app ever. Stylish, smooth working, made with taste for good music. Definitely worth of its price. The first app I ever purchased here and still my favorite one.

Best app for Google Play Music and support ever!

This is a phenomenal app for Google Play Music streaming, especially now that I don’t have to open up chrome every time I want to just listen to some tunes. It supports Listen Now, offline playlists, and even the youtube playlists you have that consists of music. Very awesome. What’s also very good (and Google doesn’t even do this) is that whatever you play here does get synced to the mobile version of the music player, which is fantastic. Love this feature so much. The developer is very supportive and very friendly - very open to suggestions and has very good customer service. This app would not work with Magic Keys on my Mac Mini, but the dev went above and beyond to fix the issue. Very comforting to see that kind of support. My main app for listening to music is here to stay.

Decent App

Works pretty well for what it is. Doesn’t have smart playlist or radio for playlists and you can’t edit song tag info, but that might be because google doesn’t allow that through whatever API this is using. Also it’s really fast at the expense of some of the nicer bells and whistles that spotify and even iTunes has. Complaints: “My Library” is just a list of songs which isn’t all that useful when you have 8000 songs. Would prefer if it had a filter for album artist/album. As it is now, you can’t really sort by artist first followed by albums which is sort of dumb. Artists/albums aren’t clickable either so there isn’t really a good way of just playing one album without finding it in the album list which has too many things in it to be useful. Artists/Album Artists should be treated as the same artist if the only difference is casing (in other words “Blink 182” and “blink 182” should not appear as two separate artists). The animations of the tracklist are pointless and just waste my time. For an app with that can safely be described as “Spartan” they don’t really belong. At least let me disable them. The equalizer doesn’t have any presets. Overall it’s better than google’s desktop app which doesn’t actually exist.

No Suggestions, Just Your Music

Music discovery is great, but sometimes your want to listen to your music with being asked to buy or try something. Remember how great iTunes was back in, say, ’03, you would search for your music and you’d see it in under a second? No suggestions, no if you like x you should listen to y, just your stuff. This is that. Fast, responsive and minimal: what Google’s interface should have been.

Pretty good overall

A very good front end for Google Music on OSX with a few strange UI choices. The search function is very fast if you know what you are looking for, but it is a pain to use when browing your library. There is no way to filter by artist and then album and you are left to filter by artist and then sort by album. Unfortunately this usually puts all of the tracks in the wrong order, so even this isn’t a great solution. It really is close to being an amazing player, because everything else works great. It just doesn’t have the browsing UI quite figured out yet.
