Gear Music Player App Reviews

technically impressive, mediocre UX

Hi Guys, I thnink technicall your app is quite impressive, but the UX is embarassing. When I enter Nils Frahm in the search for artist I get all but a link to the artist on google play. This is quite diametral to the user expectation. I am very likely to regret investing in this app if something as basic as that (while working I really just want to hear music from the artist I just hought about within 1-10 seconds, otherwise my workflow is seriously disupted and I will switch back to the web player because it can do it in 10) is not working your app simply is not worth it. Sorry, but you seriously need to work on that. best

Worked for a while then stopped entirely

Ive used Gear happily since 2012 until it crashes consistantly on 10.8. The developer has said its an incompatibility in one of Apples Frameworks and hes not going to fix it. However, I think this listing should refect that he doesnt support 10.8 any longer. I also tried it today on 10.10 and it didnt play anything. That is, I clicked on music in my Google Play playlist and it "played" the track but no sound came out. If I played the same track through the Google Player Chrome extension, no problem. Google probably changed something in their codecs or something but it totally hosed this application. The other Google Player requires Flash and is like a mini-browser. This app probably used Googles APIs to access the Google Music and now hes stuck playing catch up. Its been that way since V1. I wish there was a better widget out there.

Worked great until...

The app is fantastic however after recent updates it will not play songs regardless of the amount of time that I wait. It’s pretty frustrating considering that before I used this app for most of my work day. I hope they fix this soon!

Great app!

I’m so glad it isn’t just the website wrapped in a native app like so many “apps” in the Mac App Store. It actually has a nice modern interface!

Look Elsewhere

Avoid. Very confusing interface. No instructions whatsoever. What a colossal waste of money.

Missing Key Components

For less than $5.99 there are much better players out there (free). Missing ability to play google radio stations (CRITICAL). Would also be nice to have a mini player option with basic controls only. Other than that, this is really basic. Finds your music. Plays your music. Way too expensive for a generic web page replacement.

It works

It works without any problems, which makes it unique in the AppStore. It finally makes it possible to use the default keys your mac provides to control the playback and it syncs seamlessly with my account. Still, Im not completely satisfied. The interface - while functional - is just not on par with the original web app google provides. I wish the developers would take their design clues more from google than from iTunes. But even compared to iTunes, the app is lacking. The interface just doesnt feel as if its made from one piece, the playback-buttons seem a bit awkward, both in their placement as in their design. Thats even more true for the Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down and the "Instant" buttons as they are displayed in the "all music" view. Too much colour. Those criticisms aside, was the app worth what I payed for. Definitely yes. I would buy it again.

Nice

App is great and does almost everything I need, expect editing multiple tracks at once - that would be an awesome addition. Thanks for the handy app and that I don’t need my Browser anymore for playing music.

All I’ve been looking for

Really great app, does what it promises and does it real good. One request tho: Is it possible to add Chromecast-Support?

Great app, great dev!

The developer answers very fast to questions and feature requests. Thanks! :)

Works Great!

I bought this app after looking for a way to control Google Music from the menu bar. It works like a champ and was well worth the money. If you are a Google Misic power user then this is the app for you. The dev is accessible and responds to feature requests.

What you need to do away with the browser for Google Music

Works well with the control keys, doesnt require much memory. However, it would be nice if the "view" could be changed to: list, icon, etc. just as itunes does. Well worth the $3, but would be nice to see some future updates with these changes in mind.

Good app overall

I’m very please to be able to airplay my google music All Access subscription to my apple tv. The music player interface is very similar to itunes, and works well. But the all access part definitely needs improvement. Right now it only possible to search for a keyword which returns a list of songs. It would be very nice to be able to select an album. Also the apple tv does’t show the song name, that would be a nice improvement. In my opinion there is still room for improvemenent, but it already works very well!

Love this app. Use it daily

I’ve been using this for the past few months and it is absolutely wonderful. It gives me an iTunes type experience with my google play music library and unlimited subscription and now it even lets me do some of the things i’ve been wanting to have in it like youtube and downloading the songs (Great job guys! :D awesome features) also it looks sexy for yosemite now. It could be better though if they fix the bar in full screen to not overlap the app, and cut out 【Breakbeat】(genere) type tags from youtube videos from being in the artist names and put them in the right areas so last.fm will work propperly with them. thanks gear player guys. Keep it up :)

Full of features

This is the best Google play music player on Mac. By far has the most features and looks great too. The dev is very responsive to as well. Highly recommended!

I Like!

Since the play/pause button and such are controlled by the iOS, you can set other keys as play/pause and skip, etc. I love this feature! Works well so far. Worth the money!

How to browse youtube

So it is told that I can use my youtube account, but somehow I cannot figure how to watch my videos, there is no way to search or browse youtube. 1 star.

Somthing Google should have done long ago

This program with full AirPlay, media buttons and Apple Remote support makes Spotify look like a student project. Design blends beautifully with OSX.

Much better with the latest update

Album view is finally here, playback became much faster a smoother. It has scrobbling to Last.fm for the last couple of updates, which is nice. Now what id like to see is navigation by artists and gapless playback. Keep up the good work!

Logs out after almost every restart

UI looks ok, but the login and search part are horrible. App loses authorization after every restart for me. Instant mixes for artists cannot be created (or it’s not visible enough). If you chose to show player icon in the tray and have multiple spaces enabled at the same time, the player will not always open on the currently active space which is annoying. The good parts - hotkeys and the fact that the player can actually play music, last.fm integration.
